After Your Orthodontist Appointment

Girl Braces

What to do After Your Orthodontist Appointment:

Whether you are getting a wire adjustment, having your braces put on or trying on your new Invisalign® aligner, your mouth may feel sensitive after a visit to the orthodontist. This is often due to teeth shifting as you continue through your treatment plan. Here are five things you can do when you get home to help alleviate that discomfort.

  1. Use an ice pack. Or drink cold water! Either way, the cool temperature will work the same for your mouth as it does other parts of your body, decreasing inflammation or swelling in your gums.
  2. Apply orthodontic wax. Sometimes new or adjusted wires can cause irritation on the inner cheeks, lips or gums. Your orthodontist will have provided you with a soft wax that can be placed over the wires as needed.
  3. Take a pain reliever. Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin can help ease discomfort and reduce inflammation. Always check with your doctor first, and follow the instructions for dosage.
  4. Eat soft foods. Keep to food that does not require a lot of chewing, such as pudding, soup, smoothies or applesauce. Ice cream and other soft, cold treats are great options – both cool and soft, it’ll be easy to eat and help reduce discomfort.
  5. Be patient. Any discomfort you feel related to the treatment should pass in a few days if not sooner.
Each time you visit the orthodontist, you are one step closer to a straight and healthy smile!
