Early Orthodontic Treatment With Kids Braces

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends an orthodontic screening for children by the age of 7 for early orthodontic treatment. By the age of 7, the teeth and jaw are developed enough to allow the orthodontist to look for any bite issues that can be problematic in the future.

What Is the Value of Early Treatment?

During Early Treatment or Phase I orthodontic treatment, our main goal is to allow room for permanent teeth to erupt. We are able to monitor the space for permanent teeth, focus on the bite growth as well as the movement of the jaw.

Phase I vs Phase II Orthodontic Treatment

Phase I orthodontic treatment is geared towards children between the ages of six and ten. During Phase I treatment we focus on allowing room for permanent teeth and preventing future problems, Phase I treatment time varies between 12 – 18 months. After treatment is complete we begin to monitor the progress of eruption of permanent teeth and have a check-up appointment every 6 months.

Phase II orthodontic treatment is what many know as traditional orthodontic treatment when braces are placed on the upper and/or lower teeth. Typically, Phase II begins between the ages of 11-13, however, there is no age limit! During treatment, we can correct spaces, straighten misaligned teeth, and correct overbites and underbite concerns. Phase II treatment time averages between 12 -20 months and varies from patient to patient. Once treatment is completed, we provide retainer options to ensure your teeth don’t shift
